HC Deb 31 May 1897 vol 49 c1635
MR. H. D. GREENE (Shrewsbury)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether any and what arrangements have been or will be made upon the retirement of Mr. O'Dowd, C.B., to provide for the discharge of the duties of the offices of Judge Advocate General and Deputy Judge Advocate General?

MR. MELLOR (York, W.R., Sowerby)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether, in case of a vacancy in the office of Judge Advocate General, the Government will appoint a Minister to discharge the duties of the office who is responsible to this House, and so put an end to the arrangement whereby they are discharged by the Judge of the Probate Court?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR,) Manchester, E.

A Question of the same kind has been placed on the Paper by my hon. Friend opposite. I have to state that Mr. O'Dowd has been continued in his office for two years more. Under the circumstances it would be premature to consider now how the office is to be dealt with after that.
