§ SIR WILLIAM WEDDERBURN (Banffshire)I beg to ask the Lord Advocate what amount of surplus revenue accrued in Scotland from the herring brand fees from 1858 to 1880; and has any part of this surplus been applied to purposes connected with the fishing interest; and, if not, will the amount be now paid over to the Scottish Fishery Board to provide harbours needed on the coast of Scotland?
§ *THE LORD ADVOCATEThe Treasury decided in 1858 to retain the official brand for herrings provided if was made self supporting. There are, as the hon. Member will find on a perusal of the Estimates, many instances of appropriation in aid of the expenses of Departments which include official salaries. I see no reason for changing the present arrangement.
