HC Deb 27 May 1897 vol 49 c1405
MR. GEOFFREY DRAGE (Derby)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the great importance attached by the shipping trade to the prompt reporting of vessels which pass the Tuskar Light and Signal, he can see his way to make temporary arrangements with the Post Office under which permission can be given for the use of the existing telephone for signalling purposes?

MR. RITCHIE

Until the general question of the desirability of allowing lighthouses to be used for the purposes of commercial signalling has been decided, I do not think that I should be justified in sanctioning the use of the telephone at any particular lighthouse for such purpose.
