HC Deb 27 May 1897 vol 49 cc1404-5
MR. JAMES DALY (Monaghan, S.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster General, whether he is aware that a petition was sent in December last from the inhabitants of the townlands of Cora-vaddy, Carnabosh, Libru, Mullaghboy, Tullygally, Rathkenny, and Drumrene, in the County of Cavan, requesting the establishment of a post office at the house of Mr. Brown, Rathkenny; whether he is aware that the nearest money or postal order office to Rathkenny is Coothill, which is four miles away; and whether he will take steps to carry out the wishes of the petitioners in this case?

THE SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. R. W. HANBURY,) Preston

The Postmaster General received the petition referred to. The nearest post office to Rathkenny where money order and postal order business can be transacted is apparently Lisnageer, which is about 3½ miles distant. The inquiry made on receipt of the petition showed that the number of letters for the district was insufficient to justify the establishment of a post office at Rathkenny, but the question of extending the free delivery of letters in the locality is about to be taken up, and the hon. Member shall be informed of the result.
