HC Deb 27 May 1897 vol 49 cc1423-4
MR. P. J. O'BRIEN (Tipperary, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether he would favourably consider the extending the time of repayment of loan to clergymen in Ireland under the Glebe Act to a longer term than 35 years, as such loans are mostly for the charitable purpose of building parochial houses in poor and out of the way districts where repayment is often difficult?

MR. HANBURY

The hon. Member's proposal could not be carried out without legislation, and I think that experience has shown the disadvantage of piecemeal legislation on the subject of Government loans. I may remind the hon. Member that it is only in Ireland that clergymen are allowed the advantage of borrowing from the Government at all.
