HC Deb 25 May 1897 vol 49 cc1256-7
MR. M. J. FLAVIN (Kerry, N.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that numerous complaints have been made by men engaged in the salmon fishery in the Cashen River and Shannon Mouth by the great injury caused in the estuaries by trawlers interfering with and taking salmon in their nets; what is the prescribed distance or limit at which trawlers should fish; and whether steps will be taken to give salmon fishermen some protection in future from trawlers?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. GERALD BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

There is no evidence that trawlers have been at work in these waters within the prescribed three-mile limit, but it is open to fishermen who may feel aggrieved to apply for a bye-law prohibiting this mode of fishing, and on receipt of the application the Inspectors of Fisheries will arrange to hold a local inquiry as soon as possible.
