HC Deb 25 May 1897 vol 49 c1270
Mil. JOHN DILLON (Mayo, E.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Turkish troops in Candia have been authorised to make a sortie against the insurgents?

MR. CURZON

We are not aware that any such movement has been authorised, but it may at any time become necessary, in order to secure the water supply of the town, which is being perpetually attacked and cut off by the insurgents. The arrangement which has hitherto prevailed for the observance of a neutral zone by both parties, has been cancelled from to-day on a written request of the insurgents to the Admiral.
