HC Deb 24 May 1897 vol 49 cc1129-30
*MR. J. CARVELL WILLIAMS (Notts, Mansfield)

I beg to ask the Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education what has been the result of the Department's communication with the North Mundham School Board relative to the use of the Church Catechism in their school; and whether the Department is aware that the Catechism is still taught in the school?

SIR J. GORST

The result is that the Board have instructed their staff not to teach those parts of the Church Catechism which are distinctive of any particular denomination. The Committee of Council are not aware that any part of the Church Catechism which is distinctive of any particular denomination is now being taught in the school.

*MR. CARVELL WILLIAMS

I wish to ask the right hon. Gentleman whether we are to understand that the Church Catechism may be used in Board Schools if it be not used in its entirety? ["Order, order!"]

*MR. SPEAKER

That is not the Question on the Paper, which has been answered.
