HC Deb 13 May 1897 vol 49 c386
MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN (Kilkenny)

On behalf of the hon. Member for Dublin, St. Patrick (Mr. W. FIELD), I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether it is intended this Session to give the promised grant in aid of establishing a Veterinary College in Dublin: and, whether he is aware that the charter has been ratified and guarantors secured, and that the governors are anxious to avoid further delay?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

No grant-in-aid out of voted moneys was, so far as I am aware, ever contemplated or proposed for the establishment of a Veterinary College in Ireland. I have no funds at my disposal which could be utilised for this purpose otherwise than by legislation, which would certainly not be of a non-contentious character. The establishment of a Veterinary College would, in my opinion, be a matter proper for the consideration of a Board of Agriculture, such as it is proposed to create in the Bill now before the House.
