HC Deb 10 May 1897 vol 49 c92
MR. J. L. CAREW (Dublin, College Green)

On behalf of the hon. Member for Dublin, St. Patrick (Mr. W. FIELD), I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the Central and Associated Chambers of Agriculture, the National Agricultural Union, the Farmers' Club, and other influential societies have all passed resolutions asking the Government to appoint a special Commission to inquire into and report on the effect of gambling in futures on agriculture and trade; and whether such a Commission will be appointed at an early date?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. C. T. RITCHIE,) Croydon

I have received copies of resolutions of the nature indicated by the hon. Member which have been passed by a number of societies, chiefly connected with agriculture. I do not think that any useful purpose would be served by the appointment of a Commission.
