HC Deb 07 May 1897 vol 49 cc8-9
MR. THOMAS BAYLEY (Derbyshire, Chesterfield)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any reply has been made to the Note of the Transvaal Government of 16th February, enclosing bill of indemnity to be paid or to be caused to be paid by Her Majesty's Government for the raid made by Dr. Jameson and the British South African Company's troops; and, if so, what was the reply?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. J. CHAMBERLAIN,) Birmingham, W.

Correspondence is proceeding on the subject, but I am not likely to be in a position to make any statement to the House for some time.
