HC Deb 03 May 1897 vol 48 c1410
MR. WEIR

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster General, whether he is aware that the people of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland experience great difficulty in providing guarantees for telegraph extensions when, under Treasury Rules, it becomes the duty of the Post Office to demand such guarantees; and whether he will endeavour to induce the Treasury to relax the rules in regard to telegraph extensions so far, at least, as the Highlands and Islands of Scotland are concerned?

* MR. HANBURY

The Postmaster General is aware that in some parts of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland the people have experienced great difficulty in providing guarantees for telegraph extensions, and he hopes that this difficulty will be removed by the alteration in the system of guarantees which was announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in connection with the Budget.
