HC Deb 03 May 1897 vol 48 c1407
MR. J. G. WEIR (Ross and Cromarty)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade, whether his attention has been called to the inquiry held at the Mile End Vestry respecting the death of a lady travelling in an overcrowded carriage on the Great Eastern Railway on Easter Monday; and whether, in view of the coroner's remarks in regard to the danger arising from the overcrowding of railway carriages, he will consider the advisability of taking such steps as will enable the Board of Trade to deal with the question of overcrowding of carriages on the Great Eastern Railway?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. RITCHIE, Croydon)

No, Sir; I do not propose to initiate legislation on the subject. I have, however, called the attention of the Company to the terms of the hon. Member's Question.
