HC Deb 03 May 1897 vol 48 c1421
MR. E. H. PICKERSGILL (Bethnal Green, S.W.)

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether he is aware that a department of the French Government, namely, le Ministère de la Justice, is publishing at, the public charge a series of French translations of the principal Foreign Codes of Law; and whether, following the precedent of the State Trials Committee, the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury would be disposed favourably to regard a proposal for the appointment of a Committee charged with the duty of superintending the preparation of English translations of famous Foreign Codes, such as the Penal Code of Italy, 1890?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

I will consult the Home Secretary on the subject of this Question; but my own impression is that it will be better, at, all events, to wait and see what is the, result of the French translation of the Codes, and what value it is to students. It may well be that the Italian Code is more available for English students than the French translation.
