HC Deb 29 March 1897 vol 47 c1538
SIR ANDREW SCOBLE (Hackney, Central)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether the accounts of the London County Council are audited by a district auditor appointed by the Local Government Board for that purpose; and whether the accounts of the Departmental Committees of the London County Council are audited separately from the general accounts of that Council; and, if so, whether the accounts of the Works Department of that Council, now forming the subject of an inquiry by a Special Committee of that Council, have been audited and certified by the auditor appointed by the Local Government Board?

THE SECRETARY TO THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. T. W. RUSSELL,) Tyrone, S.

The accounts of the London County Council are audited by a district auditor appointed by the Local Government Board, and the accounts of the several departmental committees of the Council are audited as part of the accounts of the Council. The accounts of the Council, including those of the Works Department, for the year ended 31 March 1896, the period which is, as I understand, that in respect of which the proceedings of the Works Department are the subject of inquiry, have been audited and certified by the auditor appointed by the Board. The accounts of the Works Department were altered so as to accord with the facts before those accounts were submitted to the auditor.
