HC Deb 29 March 1897 vol 47 c1563
MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN (Kilkenny)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he will inquire upon what grounds the Callan Board of Guardians have failed to provide labourers' cottages for James Walsh and James Fitzgerald, of Kilmanagh; whether he is aware that Kilmanagh is badly provided with labourers' cottages; and will he cause another inquiry to be held by the Local Government Board into the matter?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

The Board of Guardians proposed to build cottages for these men; but the Local Government Board, on consideration of the evidence taken at the Inquiry, were unable to sanction the proposal, and communicated to the Guardians the grounds of objection to the cottages. Four cottages are about to be sanctioned for the electoral Division of Kilmanagh, in addition to nine already authorised, and 58 in the whole Union in addition to 100 already sanctioned. There seems no reason for holding a further Inquiry in the matter.
