WILLIAM JOHNSTON (Belfast, S.)I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, in regard to the Educational Endowments (Ireland) Act Amendment Bill, the Government have given it further consideration; and, if so, whether he can now state what course they propose to take regarding it?
§ MR. GERALD BALFOURYes, Sir. The question of amending this Bill has been most carefully considered; and we have arrived at the conclusion that without alterations so extensive as to amount to an entire reconstruction of the Bill, it would be impossible to amend it so as to carry out the views of the Government. Under the circumstances the Government will feel bound to oppose the further progress of the Bill.
