HC Deb 29 July 1897 vol 51 cc1482-3
SIR HENRY FOWLER (Wolverhampton)

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether he can give the House any information as to the probable tune when he will obtain possession of the block of houses between Parliament Street and King Street?

THE FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS (Mr. AKERS-DOUGLAS, Kent, St. Augustine's)

A large portion of the site between Parliament Street and King Street will he in my hands at Michaelmas, and I propose then to proceed with the demolition of the houses. The remainder of the properties will not all come into the possession of the Government for some months longer, owing to the inevitable delay on arbitrations.

SIR HENRY FOWLER

asked the right hon. Gentleman if he would be willing to defer a thud settlement in order to give Parliament an opportunity of pronouncing an opinion upon the scheme.

MR. AKERS-DOUGLAS

I cannot give a pledge, but I do not think the question will arise. I hope we shall have acquired the site before we shall require further Parliamentary sanction.
