HC Deb 29 July 1897 vol 51 c1469
MR. PATRICK O'BRIEN (Kilkenny)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the Statute Law Committee has refused to repeal the obsolete sections of The Catholic Relief Act 1829, which impose numerous penal disabilities on Roman Catholics in Ireland; and whether, as he suggested an appeal to the Statute Law Committee, he now intends to take any steps to repeal these sections; and, if so, when, and by what Means?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have received a copy of a letter written by the Secretary to the Statute Law Revision Committee on this subject. I see no practical advantage to he gained in asking the House to give time for legislation repealing Sections of an Act of Parliament, which are admittedly obsolete.
