HC Deb 19 February 1897 vol 46 cc785-6
SIR SEYMOUR KING (Hull, Central)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been called to the serious danger with which the India tea industry is threatened by the proposal of the Indian Government to allow pilgrims for Mecca to embark at Diamond Harbour; and what steps he proposes to take in the matter?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (LORD GEORGE HAMILTON,) Middlesex, Enfield

I have been in communication with the Government of India on the subject of my hon. Friend's Question. I expect to hear very shortly that pilgrimage from India has been suspended altogether for the present.
