HEYWOOD JOHNSTONE (Sussex, Horsham)I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, having regard to the fact that in the new assessments to Land Tax which have been made in consequence of the Finance Act, 1896, many properties have been charged in respect of which Land Tax has not hitherto been paid, he will cause a copy of the register of redeemed Land Tax, so far as it affects any parish in England and Wales, to be supplied to the parish council (or meeting where there is no council) on application by them to the Commissioners of Land Tax?
§ THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir MICHAEL HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.When the Land Tax on any property is redeemed, a particular description of the property is deposited with the clerk to the local Commissioners of Land Tax. There is also the general register of redeemed Land Tax at Somerset House, which may be inspected by any interested person. In these circumstances, I do not feel that I should be justified in sanctioning the trouble and expense which would be required in order to comply with the hon. Member's wishes.
