HC Deb 08 February 1897 vol 45 cc1535-6
ADMIRAL FIELD (Sussex, Eastbourne)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can see his way to take any action to put a stop to the importation of the inferior spirit at Sierra Leone, complained of by the Acting Colonial Secretary in Colonial Report No. 160, Sierra Leone, issued in 1890, and described in page 3 as producing terrible effects upon consumers who are our collectors and growers of our produce for export, and being such as is commonly used by painters as driers in lien of turpentine?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir MICHAEL HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.

, replying in the absence of Mr. Chamberlain: I hope to be very shortly in a position to lay before the House all the papers relating to the general question of the Liquor Traffic in West Africa.
