§ SIR CHARLES DILKE (Gloucester, Forest of Dean)I beg to ask the Attorney General whether he is aware that an inquest was held on Saturday, 23rd January, at Batley, by the Coroner for the West Riding, on the death of one Fred. Taylor, which occurred by accident in the Phoenix Mills, Batley, and that the Coroner neither gave notice of the inquest to the Factory Inspector for the district nor adjourned the inquest for the Inspector's attendance, in accordance with section 19 of the Factory and Workshop Act 1895; and, whether he will take steps to secure the due observance of the law in future?
§ THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (Sir RICHARD WEBSTER,) Isle of WightI have communicated with the Home Office upon the subject of the question of the right hon. Baronet, and I understand that the facts are correctly stated in the first paragraph of the question. I am also informed that the Coroner has been communicated with, in order to insure that in future the procedure directed by the Statute is observed. Upon the facts before me, it does not seem to me to be a case in which I ought to take proceedings under the Statute, as I have nothing to show that it is necessary, in the interests of justice, that another inquest should be held; but I shall be glad to consider any further representation if the right hon. Baronet wishes me to do so.
