HC Deb 04 February 1897 vol 45 c1313
MR. MUNDELLA

asked the First Lord of the Treasury a question arising out of his statement in moving the Education Resolution on Monday. He desired to know whether the words "not exceeding five shillings per scholar for the whole number of scholars in those schools" did not make the grant applicable to all children on the register, whereas all grants hitherto had been made on average attendance, the number on the register being nearly 600,000 children in excess of average attendance. There was no precedent for any grant except on the, basis of average attendance. Would the right hon. Gentleman have the notice relating to the resolution in the Votes so amended as to make the point clear?

THE FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY

The right hon. Gentleman has correctly interpreted the speech I made on Monday. It is unnecessary to amend the Resolution, and if the right hon. Gentleman will wait until the Bill is printed, he will see that the point he takes is adequately dealt with. ["Hear, hear!"]
