HC Deb 04 February 1897 vol 45 c1300
MR. FLYNN

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, in view of his statement made on 23rd March 1896, to the hon. Member for East Tyrone, to the effect that the Irish Government would consider at an early date the recommendation of the Commissioners of National Education that the average attendance to qualify for an assistant in a national school should be reduced from 70 to 60, whether he will ask the Treasury to sanction the grant necessary to meet the views of the Commissioners before the expiry of the present financial year?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have nothing further to add to the reply already given by me to the hon Member on Tuesday last. The Irish Government have been in communication with the Treasury, and I see no advantage in asking the Treasury to re-open the question during the present financial year.
