HC Deb 04 February 1897 vol 45 c1281
MR. D. MACALEESE (Monaghan, N.)

On behalf of the hon. Member for South Monaghan (Mr. JAMES DALY), I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he can state how many divisional commissioners of police there are in Ireland, and how much salary they receive; and, whether he can say if the reduction of the police force in Ireland will lessen the duties of the divisional commissioners; and, if so, whether he will reduce the salaries of the divisional commissioners accordingly?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. GERALD BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

There are four divisional commissioners at present employed in Ireland, each in receipt of a salary of £1,000 per annum. The proposed reduction of the police force will not affect the duties or emoluments of these officers.
