HC Deb 09 April 1897 vol 48 c846
MR. T. M. HEALY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Beutenant of Ireland if his attention has been drawn to the prosecution, at the Belleek, county Fermanagh, Petty Sessions on 8th December, of R. N. Barron, County Court Registrar, of Donegal, for discharging firearms on the public road, which was withdrawn by District Inspector Milling on his own responsibility; is he aware that Mr. Jones, R. M., presiding, expressed a, wish that the case he proceeded with, and that Mr. Johnson, J. P., called, the withdrawal a gross miscarriage of justice; and, if so, who is responsible for the statement that the case has been adjudicated on?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have communicated with Mr. Jones, R.M., in reference to this case, and he confirms the substance of the statement made by me on Friday last that the withdrawal of the prosecution was suggested by the Bench. Mr. Jones adds that Mr. Johnson did not make use of the words attributed to him in the Question. I am not aware who is responsible for the statement that the case had been adjudicated on. The statement was not made by me.
