HC Deb 06 April 1897 vol 48 c596
MR. ARTHUR BROOKFIELD () Sussex, Rye

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether every brewer has at present to fill in a return, giving, without any exception, the materials that he uses in the production or manufacture of beer; and whether the particulars supplied by the brewers to the Excise officials in this manner would include the case of minute quantities of chemicals used as hop substitutes or hop supplements?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Sir MICHAEL HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.

The return to which the hon. Member refers is a return of the materials on which the Beer Duty charge is based. It does not show the quantities either of hops or of hop substitutes which the brewer may use.
