HC Deb 19 May 1896 vol 40 c1689
MR. GIBSON BOWLES (Lynn Regis)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether he can state the amount of the proceeds of the Estate Duty derived in England from personal property during the year 1895–6.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (SIR MICHAEL HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.

The proceeds of the Estate Duty derived in England from personal property, during the year 1895–6, amounted to about £7,530,000. The exact figures cannot be ascertained for another fortnight or three weeks, but the above is a very close approximation.
