HC Deb 01 May 1896 vol 40 cc343-4
MR. TULLY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the local authorities in Castlerea, Granard, and other places, have protested against the action of the Veterinary Department in pressing to have stringent regulations enforced for the muzzling of dogs; and, whether he will direct an inquiry to be made with a view to the adoption of some other system?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

No protests have been received at the Veterinary Department from the Castlerea or Granard local authorities against the action of the Department in urging local authorities generally to enforce a uniform code of regulations for the muzzling of dogs with a view to prevent the spread of rabies. Eighty-two local authorities have adopted muzzling regulations. A Departmental Committee is being appointed by the Board of Agriculture to inquire into the working of the laws relating to dogs. The Irish Department will be represented on this Committee.
