HC Deb 23 March 1896 vol 38 cc1608-9
MR. J. A. RENTOUL (Down, E.)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Agriculture, whether his attention has been called to repeated statements in the Australian papers regarding defective inspection as to the sanitary condition of cattle slaughtered in Australia to be sent as frozen meat to Great Britain; and, whether he will inquire fully into the efficiency of these inspections?

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE (Mr. WALTER LONG,) Liverpool, West Derby

I have seen some newspaper cuttings hearing on this subject, but I do not gather that there is any ground for public apprehension with respect to it. Inquiry as to the system of inspection adopted in the Australian colonies has already been made and the results communicated to the Local Government Board, within whose province the matter really rests.
