HC Deb 20 March 1896 vol 38 cc1462-3
MR. F. CAWLEY (Lancashire, Prestwich)

I beg to ask the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the French Government will follow the same course in regard to the Treaty concluded between the Queen of Madagascar and this country as they did in taking up the administration of Tunis in 1881, in regard to the Anglo-Tunisian. Treaty then in existence?

MR. CURZON

I am afraid it is not in my power to say in advance what course the French Government will follow in regard to the Treaty concluded between the Queen of Madagascar and this country. That will be known when the Treaty is communicated to us. But there was a full discussion in the French Chamber yesterday, and a statement by the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, and until we get a full report of his speech I think I had better refrain from expressing an opinion about it in this House.
