HC Deb 05 March 1896 vol 38 c239
SIR HENRY HOWARTH (Salford, S.)

I beg to ask the Attorney General whether his attention has been called to the protracted and costly proceedings involved in recent election petitions, which will make it impossible for anybody but very wealthy men either to prosecute or defend such petitions, and thereby nullify the Corrupt Practices Act; and if he proposes to ask the House to concur in some adequate remedy?

THE ATTORNEY GENERAL (Sir RICHARD WEBSTER,) Isle of Wight

The proceedings in the recent election petitions have naturally attracted my attention, but, as I stated the other day, until the proceedings are concluded, it is not possible to say whether any and what action should be taken.
