§ GENERAL LAURIE (Pembroke and Haverfordwest)I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for War, whether, when the Major who should by 79 seniority be appointed second in command of an infantry battalion is employed extra-regimentally, the next senior Officer is appointed to fill the position, or whether it is kept open for the senior Officer on reverting to regimental duty?
§ *MR. BRODRICKIn future, the appointment of second-in-command of a battalion will be given by selection. If the officer proposed to be selected be employed extra-regimentally, he will be given the option of returning to the regiment or continuing in his extra-regimental appointment. If he choose the latter alternative, another officer will be selected for second in command.
