HC Deb 16 June 1896 vol 41 c1155
MR. McCARTAN

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade, whether considering the extremely important position of Mew Island, at the entrance to Belfast Lough, and the very large number of ships and steamers which pass it daily, he will make inquiry as to the desirability of having telephonic communication established with the mainland.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. C. T. RITCHIE,) Croydon

I presume the hon. Member refers to electrical communication between the Lighthouses and the mainland. A Royal Commission is at present sitting to inquire what Lighthouses, etc., should be electrically connected with the shore, and I have no doubt that the case of Mew Island will receive their attention.
