§ MR. ENGLEDOWI beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, whether he would ascertain the number of warders and attendants employed in District Lunatic Asylums in Ireland, and how many of that number are tradesmen, with a view to drawing the attention of the several Boards of Governors to the great benefit to be gained by the employment of tradesmen as warders and attendants, and thus facilitate the useful employment of the patients, which would be so much to their advantage?
§ MR. GERALD BALFOURThe inspectors have from time to time drawn 848 the attention of Boards of Governors to the great importance of adding tradesmen attendants to the asylum staffs with the view of increasing the employment of patients, and at present out of 722 attendants employed in the various asylums in Ireland, 176 are tradesmen.
