HC Deb 23 July 1896 vol 43 c483
MR. HERBERT LEWIS (Flint Boroughs)

I beg to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, whether he is aware that in the counties of Cardigan, Carmarthen, Glamorgan, Merioneth, Montgomery, Pembroke, and Radnor, no property qualification is required for Commissioners of Land Tax, whereas in the other Welsh counties and in England a qualification of £100 is requisite; and whether he will take the necessary steps to abolish the property qualification in the counties of Anglesey, Brecknock, Carnarvon, Denbigh, and Flint, and in the English counties?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

I am aware that in the counties first named by the hon. Member no property qualification is required for Commissioners of Land Tax. There seems to be no record of the reasons which led to an exception being made in these cases from the general rule that a qualification of £100 a year in land is required. I do not propose to alter that rule.
