HC Deb 10 July 1896 vol 42 cc1229-30
MR. D. MACALEESE (Monaghan, N.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, has he received a copy of a resolution passed by the Castleblayney Town Commissioners, in favour of the insertion of a clause in the Irish Land Bill to enable corporations to purchase lands for parks and open spaces, and to compel landlords to sell suitable plots for such purposes, such plots to vary in size from 50 to 300 acres, according to necessity; and, can he see his way to comply with the request conveyed in the resolution?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

Such a clause would not be germane to the Land Bill. Moreover, assuming that it were desirable to alter the existing law as suggested, the proposal would appear to have no special application to Ireland, but to be one that should be dealt with, if at all, in a Bill applying to the whole of the United Kingdom.
