HC Deb 18 February 1896 vol 37 c540
MR. E. H. PICKERSGILL (Bethnal Green, S.W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, whether some of the workshops of Wormwood Scrubbs Prison are overcrowded; and, if so, will he take steps to remedy the evil?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Sir MATTHEW WHITK RIDLEY,) Lancashire, Blackpool

The answer to the hon. Member's question is in the negative. There was, in the opinion of the Prison Commissioners, some overcrowding in the artisans' shop at the prison, but steps were taken by them to reduce the number of persons thus employed to a number which in their opinion is sufficiently limited for effective and strict supervision. I have reason to believe that at present there is no overcrowding.
