HC Deb 18 February 1896 vol 37 cc546-7
MR. C. J. ENGLEDEW

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland if he will consider the advantage of bringing in a Bill to enable Boards of Guardians in Ireland to obtain advances of public money for the rebuilding, repairing, and extending of workhouses on the same terms as the most favoured of public boards in Ireland?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have already answered two questions in reference to this matter. It would, no doubt, be desirable that Boards of Guardians in Ireland should be empowered to obtain public loans for the purposes of rebuild- ing and extending workhouses, and I am still making inquiry into the legal point whether they are entitled to obtain such loans under the existing law.
