HC Deb 17 February 1896 vol 37 cc445-6
DR. ROBERT AMBROSE (Mayo, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, as representing the Postmaster General, whether his attention has been drawn to the inconvenience caused by the delivery of the mail to Clare Island having been reduced from three times a week to twice a week; and, whether this change has been effected with the knowledge of the Postmaster General, and on what grounds?

MR. HANBURY

The post to Clare Island was maintained for many years under a guarantee, from the owners of the island. On the island passing into the hands of the Congested Districts Board the guarantee was discontinued, and the question arose whether the Department was justified in maintaining, at the cost of the Revenue, a service of greater frequency than once a week. Taking all the circumstances in to account, the Postmaster General decided that a service twice a week should be maintained.
