HC Deb 13 February 1896 vol 37 cc232-3
SIR ELLIS ASHMEAD-BARTLETT

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, whether the Sultan has offered an amnesty to the Armenian Zeitounli insurgents; whether these insurgents destroyed a number of Mussulman villages, massacred the inhabitants, and killed Turkish prisoners of war; and, whether there has been any massacre of Christians in Zeitoun?

MR. CURZON

An amnesty for the Zeitounlis has been arranged for by the Ambassadors and the Turkish Government. Information has been received from the latter that the Zeitounlis have burned and plundered Mussulman villages; but, beyond news of the capture of the town of Andrin, no confirmation of the statement has been obtained. Turkish soldiers have been killed by the Zeitounlis, and the British Consul reports that the number was placed, by one witness, at 250. We have heard of no massacre of Christians at Zeitoun.
