HC Deb 14 August 1896 vol 44 c828
MR. J. F. HOGAN (Tipperary, Mid)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether his attention has been called to the case of a man, named Martin Dumphy, aged 70, who, after a continous residence of 50 years in England, was recently transferred from the St. Prancras Union, London, to the workhouse at Roscrea, county Tipperary, Ireland; and, whether any alteration in the law is contemplated that will put a stop to this practice?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. GERALD BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

The facts appear to be as stated in the Question, though I am informed that Dumphy had only resided in St. Pancras for three weeks, and had not acquired a settlement in England or Wales. Communications are still in progress between the authorities in England, Ireland and Scotland on the general question of the deportation of paupers.
