HC Deb 14 August 1896 vol 44 c837
MR. C. T. GILES (Cambridge, Wisbech)

I beg to ask the First Commissioner of Works whether he has become aware of the unpleasant smells that occasionally rise from the floor near the Bar of the House; and whether, during the Recess, he will take steps to remedy the inconvenience to which Members in that part of the House are thereby subjected?

MR. AKERS-DOUGLAS

I am aware that on several occasions unpleasant smells have for a few minutes pervaded the House. I have satisfied myself, by personal inspection and investigation that they do not proceed from drains, but come from the passage of objectionable cargoes on the river, the sole air in-take for this chamber being from the Terrace.
