HC Deb 03 August 1896 vol 43 c1348
MR. HERBERT LEWIS (Flint Boroughs)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury, whether he is aware that the representatives of deceased testators whose wills are written in the Welsh language are now called upon to pay a charge in addition to the ordinary probate fees for the translation of such wills into the English language; and, whether, having regard to the fact that a large number of Welsh testators are unable to speak or understand the English language, and that their wills are for official purposes required to be translated into English, the Treasury will in future bear the charge for translation?

MR. HANBURY

If the President of the Probate Division is prepared (as I understand he is) to recommend that in future the cost of translating Welsh wills should be paid by the public, the Treasury will not raise any objection.
