HC Deb 03 August 1896 vol 43 c1350
MR. HERBERT ROBERTSON (Hackney, S.)

I beg to ask the Vice President of the Committee of Council on Education will he explain why the school managers of Aldingham Parish School, Ulverston, have been ordered to take children into their school from neighbouring parishes, which have sufficient school accommodation for the children in their own parishes, notwithstanding that taking in such children involves the necessity of adding to the staff of the Aldingham School, and the school managers have not sufficient funds to add to their staff; and, if so, whether the Aldingham School managers can be relieved from taking in children from districts outside the parish for which the school was provided?

THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE COUNCIL (Sir JOHN GORST,) Cambridge University

The general rule of the Committee of Council is to require all children to be admitted to a school, so long as there is room for them, whether they belong to the parish in which the school is situate or not. Without such a rule the administration of the Education Department would become exceedingly difficult.
