HC Deb 16 May 1895 vol 33 c1313
MR. J. G. SWIFT MACNEILL (Donegal, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland—(1) whether applications from various quarters have been made to the Irish Local Government Board to take necessary steps to establish a Pasteur Institute in Dublin; and (2) whether, having regard to the fact that this system involves operations upon living animals, he will be able to give an undertaking that public money will not be applied to the establishment of an institution of this character in Dublin?

*THE CHIEF SECRETARY FOR IRELAND (Mr. JOHN MORLEY,) Newcastle-upon-Tyne

I understand that the Boards of Guardians of a large number of Unions in Ireland have adopted a Resolution of the nature referred to in the first paragraph of the question. The Local Government Board are now collecting information as to the amount expended from the poor rates in sending poor persons to the Institute in Paris for treatment, and my hon. Friend may rest assured that the whole matter will be carefully considered when it comes before me.
