HC Deb 21 March 1895 vol 31 cc1556-7
MR. W. S. CAINE

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India, with reference to the Commission which was appointed in 1889 by the Government of India to inquire into the marriage system prevailing in Malabar, and as that Commission reported in December 1891, have final orders yet been passed upon it by the Secretary of State?

MR. GEORGE RUSSELL

The Commissioners were divided in opinion, but the Indian Authorities preferred the views expressed by the President, the late Sir T. Muthesamy Aiyar, and the Bill is under revision accordingly. The Secretary of State has not yet seen the revised Bill, nor has he passed any orders on the subject.
