Shaw), I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether the examination fee charged to candidates for the Civil Service is regulated according to the probable or the possible maximum salary attainable in the customary course of promotion; if neither be the case, upon what basis is the fee regulated?

HIBBERTAs a general rule the fee is fixed according to the maximum amount of salary attainable in customary course of promotion without further examination or certificate, but power is reserved, in the case of open competitions, to fix a lower fee in special cases where it is thought equitable or expedient to do so.
