HC Deb 21 February 1895 vol 30 c1260
MR. ARNOLD-FORSTER (Belfast, W.)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for the Colonies in whom the Sovereignty of Amatongaland is vested; whether there is any effective British occupation of the country; whether there are any resident British Officials in the district; and, what are the names of such officials?

THE UNDER SECRETARY FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. SYDNEY BUXTON,) Tower Hamlets, Poplar

Under the McMahon Award the northern part of Amatongaland was placed within the sphere of influence of Portugal; all that part south of the Portuguese line is, as I stated the other day, distinctly within the sphere of British influence. As regards our relations with the Chief, he has acknowledged that, as regards the above southern portion of his territory, he obeys the Queen. There is no staff of British officers in the country, but, when necessary for the transaction of business with the Tongas, an officer is sent from Zululand.
